The resolution of Daniel: Half-Human is a mixture of a happy and a not so happy ending. Daniel goes from an average German teenager to a Jewish adult. Even though he had some difficulty, he later embraced the fact that he is of Jewish decent. When Daniel and his family move to America, he becomes an interpreter for the British army. This is where he finds his friend Armin, who was an SS in the Nazi Party. Daniel finds out that he carved off the scar that you needed to have to be in the SS, and looses his friendship with him. The message that I took from this book is that friendship does not always prevail. "I had to smile too. This person, this face inevitably brought out something warm in me, an instant longing to forget all that had come between us. I had to struggle to suppress the surge of joy I felt. I scanned the form that my fellow interpreter filled out. They wouldn't take you? No, Armin answered. I felt he was lying to me."(Chotjewitz 323) This is when Armin lied to Daniel when he asked if he joined the SS, and instantly Daniel rolled Armin's sleeve up to find the wound that came from carving off the tattoo. This book is still relevant today because it shows people that friends come and go.

A German teenager named Daniel and his best friend Armin are obsessed with joining the Hitler Youth during early World War II when Hitler and the Nazis were gaining power over Germany. Later in the book, Daniel is told that his mother is Jewish and may face future discrimination. He then tries to hide the fact that he is half Jewish and keeps a low profile. Although not Jewish, Daniels dad is forced to stop practicing law and move in a small apartment. His dad's nationalistic views prevents his family from fleeing Germany. The Jewish refugees escaping Nazi persecution reminds me of the Syrian refugee crisis that is going on today in our society. In both cases, people had to leave their home country because of oppression. Their lives were in danger to an extent where they have to leave their country to feel safe and be away from danger. Why is it that 3rd world countries like Syria have no human rights, but in other places of the world people do?
I am reading a book called Daniel Half Human, which is about a German teenager who is all caught up in the uprising Nazi movement, until his life is turned upside down when he finds out he has Jewish ancestry. Daniel doesn't like the news that he is half Jewish, and decides to join the Hitler Youth. "I don't want anything to do with that! I'm German, just like everyone else!"(Chotjewitz 65) On November 9th, 1938, Daniel's friend Armin warns him and his cousin Miriam of what was to come that day, which was when the Nazis burned Jewish businesses, homes, and synagogues. The act of the Nazis burning and smashing Jewish property was in the book and in real life. Many German Jews took the opportunity to emigrate and leave Germany."Over half of these individuals, approximately 304,000 Jews, emigrated during the first six years of the Nazi dictatorship, leaving only approximately 214,000 Jews in Germany proper on the eve of World War II."(United States Holocaust Memorial Museum 2017) Daniel and his parents fled to America, where Daniel then becomes an interpreter for the British army.
Introduction Bullying is a problem in every school and needs to be stopped. Bullying is the use of superior strength or influence to intimidate someone, typically to force him or her to do what one wants. Bullying affects everyone and has lead to health problems and suicide in some cases. According to the CDC suicide is the third leading cause of death of youth between the ages of 10 and 24. It results in approximately 4400 lives lost each year. Deaths from youth suicide are only part of the problem. (http://www.heyugly.org/aboutStatistics.php ) Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year. Approximately 160,000 teens skip school every day because of bullying. 17% of American students report being bullied 2 to 3 times a month or more within a school semester. Take a stand in your community by hosting a Bullying Policy Makeover event customizing your school’s anti-bullying policy. We are interested in this problem because bullying is a problem everywhere and many people have hurt or even killed themselves. We are also interested in this issue because we believe that everyone should be treated equally and fairly. It is wrong for someone to be treated with no respect or being left out by people. Another thing is that bullying leads to are things that are unexplainable. For example school shootings, suicide, and physical and mental injuries. That is a big problem for kids to be dealing with a lot of stress. We are also interested in this major issue because people who have been bullied don’t know what to do and don’t know how to stop. Kids that bully do it for many reasons, for example, they take their anger out on other kids. The do it for popularity, they feel unpopular and jealous of other people. They do not get enough attention from other people and they might watch many violent movies. (http://eschooltoday.com/bullying/Why-do-people-bully.html) Others should care about this because bullying will never go away and affects people in a major way. You should also care because even though people try to help others who have been bullied, they don’t want to come out of their shell and it's scary that they don’t want to come out to try to fix the problem. Also if they don’t try and solve the problem it will never go away. Bullying is a major problem everywhere, and it needs to stop. The Issue Bullying is dangerous in many ways because it affects people physically and mentally. It also makes them feel lonely, sad, and have no interest in school activities. They also have, frequent headaches, stomach aches, and often fake illnesses. The rate of people that are bullied from K-12 is 49% and only 30.8% of them state if they are being bullied or have been bullied. A small number of students that have been bullied. ay may seriously harm the school because most of the people that get bullied in high school will bring a gun to school and shoot people there. There's also lots of cyberbullying that goes on that’s one of the most common ones that people get bullied 12-18 year old students reported saying that 15% of students get bullied by cyber bullying and 35% on traditional bullying. Most Bullies bully mostly because they haven't learned kindness compassion and respect. They have no reason to bully others too most of the ones that bully usually have been bullied before or they have been treated bad or are being treated bad at home. So this makes them learn to not be nice to other people and that makes them become bullies because they are not treating people the way they should be treated.this is why the death rate of young teenagers are committing suicide so help now ask your kids if they are being bullied at school or anywhere else.(STOMP Out Bullying :: Why Do Kids Bully?) The Solution Bullying can threaten students’ physical and emotional safety at school and can negatively impact their ability to learn. The best way to address bullying is to stop it before it starts. There are a number of things school staff can do to make schools safer and prevent bullying. The Family Resource Center in Raleigh states that their service is free and treats kids between the ages of 6 to 17 who have been bullied. They teach kids on how to deal with bullying and how they can address the issue in school. Wake County’s School Board policy 1710 prohibits harassment and bullying on all levels. The Wake County Board of Education has a priority on providing every student and staff member with a safe working environment. (http://www.wcpss.net/domain/46) Even though Wake County announced this policy, there has still been reports of bullying in schools. Help is still needed in our community because only 1 in about 25 adults will intervene when someone is being bullied. People who have been bullied often are scared to tell anyone about it, and feel that it's no big problem. The victims of bullying will be depressed, and will have thoughts of suicide. Bullying is the source of suicide being the 2nd leading cause to kids death ages 10-19. Conclusion Our group has come up with a way to help kids deal with bullying. Our plan is to set up an organization in school that is similar to what counselors do. Our first step is to set up a website and make posters and post them around the school to let people know what we are doing. Next we are going to set up a survey to collect data to see who has been bullied during their middles school year or even during after school activities. After that we need to give it but we needed to make sure that the teachers are cool with their students taking the survey and seeing if they have the time. After we know everyone has taken the survey we will collect the data and try to set up a time after or even during school that we can meet up with the kids. We had a problem because we were worried that the kids won't come out of their shell. But if they do we will teach the kids how to deal and solve their problem. We will teach them the methods and the ways of how to deal with bullying. After we feel like they are ready we will do a little improv acting to see if they have the courage to deal with it. Then when we know that they are ready we will keep having them come but for a shorter time. We also want to know how well we have been teaching the kids so our plan is to make another survey on google drive and let the kids take it. This information will allow us to see if we should change the way we are teaching or to see if we are going a good job of teaching. The reason why we want to do this is because bullying is a problem all over the world. It affects people in many ways with their physical and mental health. If kids are hurting themselves or are getting ill because of bullies. Then the bullies know that they are being successful. Plus, when the kids or anyone else don't tell others then the problem can not end. Another thing is that kids should not be treated this way it's a way of disrespect to others. Our goal is to make bullying less of a problem in Wake County and especially in Martin Middle School. Our goal is to help 20-40 students in about 1 month. The reason we have this goal is because it allows us to spend a some time with the kids and really get to work with them. In completing this goal we have to work efficient and have to find a way that bests suits the kids for helping them with their problem. Our group really hopes that we can make a very big difference in our community. Plus, we also hope that bullying ends entirely because it caused so many problems. Currently, more than 4,000 people are homeless in Wake County alone. The life expectancy rate for living life on the streets is around 46 years. Malnutrition is one of the causes of living life this short. Many of these people on the streets are not fully educated, so getting a well paying job will be hard. I am interested in this issue because I am willing to help people who are in urgent need of a better life to live, and to not let them live a sorrow and depressed life. What we can do to assist with this issue is giving food or water to a homeless person. Even clothes would be great. You can help by volunteering or donating at the Raleigh Rescue Mission website. We should care about this issue because a state of happiness is triggered from doing good and helping others. And I'm pretty sure, everyone wants to be happy. ;)
On March 5, a student at Wake Forest High was accused of bullying. This student pulled another student to the ground. The student who got pulled down is claimed to have said racial slurs and threats to the other student. This issue corresponds with our community because bullying happens often. I am interested in this issue because I see kids who have been cursed at, threatened, and even emotionally harassed by others, and end up taking all their anger out on someone else. I want to do something to help prevent it, and help the student who is being picked on. Many of these people wont know how to handle the pressure, and may end up topping themselves. We should care about this issue because bullying does lead to violence, hate, and suicide, and as a good community, no one wants to see that. We can prevent this by bringing peace with the bully and the victim, and helping the bully find a solution to his anger, and bring his self confidence back up, which is what most alleged bullies lack.
Why immigrants came to the US
Many immigrants came to the US seeking greater economic opportunity, while some, such as the Pilgrims in the early 1600s, arrived in search of religious freedom. Some of America’s first settlers came in search for freedom to practice their faith. In 1620, a group of people known as the Pilgrims fled from the tyranny in Europe and arrived at Plymouth,Massachusetts, where they established a colony. The Native Indians there exchanged their intellect of agriculture for weapons, metal cooking utensils, and cloth. The natives then taught the pilgrims how to farm, what to use for fertilizer, and all the essentials for survival. Overall, the three main reasons of immigration in the US is money, fame, territory expansion, and spread of religion. |
